SPANISH FORT | Four-star linebacker Tre Threat committed to Auburn on Thursday, fulfilling a childhood dream that began in his back yard years ago.
Threat, ranked the No. 10 inside linebacker, announced at a ceremony inside Spanish Fort High School's library that he would accept a scholarship offer from Auburn.
Threat chose Auburn after narrowing his choices to the Tigers and Ole Miss.
"It's a dream come true," Threat said. "I was the little kid in the yard wearing the plastic Auburn football helmet pretending I was an Auburn football player. That was me."
Threat will get to live out the dream in January. He's scheduled to graduate from Spanish Fort in December and enroll early at Auburn.
The transition shouldn't be difficult.
"Auburn is close to home, but it didn't matter how far away it was, it feels like home to me," Threat said. "I know that's where I'm supposed to be. Every time I went there I felt like I was wanted, that I was needed.
"It's just a great environment. I love the people. I love the coaches, the players and the campus."
It's not an unfamiliar feeling.
"I love everything about Auburn and I always have," Threat said. "I've grown up an Auburn fan and I knew I would always be an Auburn fan no matter where I went to college."
Threat doesn't have to worry about hiding his true feelings.
"I was very ecstatic when I got the offer and I'm even more happier now that I'm committed to the university that I love," Threat said. "I can't say how blessed I am to be living out my dream."
Threat no longer will have to pretend to be an Auburn football player. He can put the plastic Auburn helmet on the shelf.
"I'll get the real thing now," he said.
Threat (pronounced "Threet") is Auburn's sixth commitment in the 2016 class and first linebacker.
Auburn's other defensive commitments include Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) Rivals250 safety Stephen Davis Jr. and three-star defensive tackles Quinnen Williams of Wenonah (Birmingham) and David Marshall of Upson Lee in Thomaston, Ga.
The Tigers have commitments from two of their top offensive targets. Calhoun (Ga.) three-star tight end Landon Rice and five-star receiver Nate Craig-Myers of Tampa (Fla.) Catholic both have made known their intentions to sign with Auburn.
