AUBURN | Archer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) linebacker Donta Evans traveled to Auburn on Thursday to watch practice, but he wasn't there to see the players.
He wanted to see the guys coaching them.
Evans, who was accompanied on the visit by his father and younger brother and sister, watched new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and new linebackers coach Lance Thompson.
"I got to see practice, but most importantly I got to watch the coaches coach," Evans said. "I got to see how Coach Muschamp and Coach Thompson coach. I was mainly focused on watching them.
"I love the way they teach and their attention to detail. And the intensity of practice was really good. Today was a great day. It was a lot more than I expected."
Evans, 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, was very impressed with Muschamp. He thinks very highly of the Tigers' new defensive leader.
"He's amazing," Evans said. "He's the greatest defensive mind in the world right now. Being able to watch him, the legendary Coach Muschamp, a future Hall of Famer, is incredible.
"To say I even have an offer from here and to have the opportunity to watch him and play for him, it's great. It's a blessing."
Evans has an offer from Auburn, as well as ones from Kentucky, Louisville, Wake Forest, North Carolina and N.C. State. He expects the list to grow after visiting several schools over the spring and summer, including Ole Miss, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Illinois and Ohio State.
Evans' top four, in alphabetical order, are Auburn, Kentucky, North Carolina and North Carolina State.
"I love the coaches at Auburn," he said. "The coaching I would get if I came to Auburn would be amazing. I'm just thankful to have the opportunity to play at Auburn.
"I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I'll definitely be back for a game."
Evans transferred to Archer from Lake Marion High in Lake Marion, S.C. in January. He plans to announce his commitment on Sept. 1, his 17th birthday.
