MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Carver-Montgomery (Ala.) Rivals100 quarterback and Auburn commit Jeremy Johnson became the first player from the city of Montgomery to be accepted to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Friday afternoon during a ceremony at his high school.
The accomplishment is meaningful.
"It means a lot knowing the greats that have played in this game. I never thought I'd be selected, but right now I'm thanking God and I can't be more excited," Johnson said.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Johnson has been working for this moment for three years. He started his journey by leading his unknown Carver-Montgomery team to a National Select 7-on-7 championship the summer before his sophomore season.
Since, Johnson has put up prolific numbers and seen his stock soar. Johnson broke into the Rivals250 before his senior season began, and after throwing for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns, while rushing for another 706 yards and nine touchdowns this fall, Johnson broke into the Rivals100.
It was during his spectacular senior season that saw Johnson and his Carver-Montgomery teammates fall in the Class 6A semifinals, that he learned he was invited to play in the prestigious game.
"As soon as I got the text I shot it to everyone. I told everyone because of how excited I was to play in the game," Johnson said. "I've grown since my tenth grade year, I feel like I deserve to play in this game. I've been fighting all year and to have the opportunity, it's amazing."
What makes Johnson's invitation into the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that much more significant is that his father, Ojedita, is in the military, currently mobilized at Fort Benning, Georgia.
"I'm a military man, so this is a great honor for him and me," Mr. Johnson said. "He's representing the United States Army like I am. It's great. This honor means the world to him."
Johnson is looking forward to meeting new people during his time in San Antonio, but make no mistake about it, this will be a business trip for the mild mannered signal caller. Johnson has steadily climbed up the rankings and isn't planning to let that momentum slide now.
"My goal is to show that I'm one of the best in the nation and I feel like I'm underrated, but that pumps me up. I like being underrated," Johnson said.
After a successful fall, Johnson will now hit the hardwood, leading his No. 1 ranked Wolverines' basketball team as they defend their state title.
