Injury ends career of Rah Rah White

Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik announced on Thursday that redshirt sophomore linebacker Jawara White will no longer play football for Auburn University.

"Jawara White has sustained an injury that will no longer allow him to play football. Although this is disappointing for Jawara, our medical staff, his family and our coaching staff all agree that this is in his best interest," Chizik said.

"At Auburn, our top priority is and will always be the health and welfare of our student-athletes. Jawara will continue to work toward receiving his degree from Auburn and will always be a part of our Auburn family."

White commented himself on Twitter Thursday afternoon.

"I have to say giving up the game of football is the hardest thing I ever had to do. Thank you all for the prayers, WAR EAGLE," White said.

White missed his freshman year after suffering a neck injury. Doctors found fluid on his spinal cord then. He worked his way back and played as a redshirt freshman last year. Auburn did not release the specifics of his injury, but it was similar enough to his original injury that he was told to give up football.

Auburn signed White in 2010 from Charles Henderson High School in Troy, Ala. White was ranked the No. 23 outside linebacker in the nation by Rivals.com. He participated in the 2009 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic after a senior season where he tallied 67 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, one interception and a returned fumble for a touchdown. White also rushed for three touchdowns and caught two more.

The 6-foot-2, 230-plus pound White began to come into his own late last season at outside linebacker with six tackles at LSU on October 22, and playing some middle linebacker, tallied nine tackles and a tackle for loss against Ole Miss on October 29. White played in ten games and started two in 2011.

White ends his career with 23 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in his career.

The loss of White leaves Auburn thin at the middle linebacker position behind Jake Holland. Young players like Chris Landrum and Anthony Swain, and incoming freshman Cassanova McKinzy will be counted on to provide depth.
