AUBURN, Ala. | One of the top junior college pass-rushers will be chasing quarterbacks in the SEC next season.
Copiah-Lincoln (Wesson, Miss.) defensive end Paul James III plans to play at Auburn. He plans to announce that decision in two weeks when he returns for an official visit.
"I'm going to commit," James III said. "That's my plan right now."
James III, who finished his sophomore season with 14 sacks in nine games, visited Auburn on Saturday. It was his first visit to the Plains.
The Miami, Fla.-native saw Auburn lose to Ole Miss, 27-19. He saw the Tigers' defensive line get pressure on the quarterback, but not enough.
"I feel like (Auburn) needs the extra help," James III said. "I saw how much time they gave the quarterback, and that's too much time in my book. That's what I want to bring to the table."
The need for experienced pass rushers isn't the only reason James III likes Auburn. He's also friends and former high school teammate of Carlton Davis, Auburn's freshman cornerback.
"That's very big," James III said. "That's somebody I can rely on in hard times or when I don't know something. It would be a good thing for us to be back together."
The two will meet again Nov. 13-15 when James III returns for an official visit. That's when he plans to make his commitment.
"I'm really looking forward to my next visit," James III said. "Just the way they treat me. They treat me like family already. I love that."
This season as a sophomore, James III recorded 14 sacks in nine games. He was named the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College's Defensive Player of the Week after recording 8.5 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, three quarterback-hurries and three sacks last week against Jones County.
James III is scheduled to graduate in December with two years to play two.
