Good news, but surprising.
"My coach called me in his office and he was talking to Coach (Will) Muschamp on the phone," Jones said. "Coach Muschamp said they really liked my film, and then surprised me with an offer.
"I was really shocked. It was cool just having Coach Muschamp call and be on the phone, and then when he offered, it was crazy."
Jones, 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, has a lot of respect for Muschamp, enough to want to visit him in Auburn.
"I know a lot about Coach Muschamp," Jones said. "I know he has coached some great players and is known for having great defenses.
"I'm going to take a visit to Auburn. It will either be the spring or the summer. Auburn is in the SEC, one of the best conferences, so they are definitely up there."
Jones also claims offers from TCU, Miami, Michigan, Ole Miss, Missouri, Ohio State, Nebraska and Texas Tech, among others.
Rivals.com ranks Jones the No. 14 safety and No. 213 prospect in the 2016 class.

Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.) offensive tackle Marcus Tatum is another out-of-state prospect that Auburn has offered.
Tatum, 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, learned of the news Thursday.
"Coach (Scott) Fountain called my coach (Wednesday) night, and then (Thursday) I (direct messaged) Coach Fountain on Twitter just to make sure," Tatum said. "And he let me know they offered me a scholarship."
It was big news for Tatum.
"It felt great. It's a blessing to just receive the offer from Auburn," he said. "I know a lot about Auburn. Their offense is amazing. Our high school runs a similar offense, the hurry-up with the play cards on the sidelines.
"Auburn is a great school and program. I've never been, but I'm going to visit in the spring. I'm going up there for a spring practice."
Tatum now claims offers from Auburn, Miami, N.C. State, Cincinnati and Tulane. He's also receiving interest from Nebraska and Florida, among others. Tatum is planning to travel to Gainesville on Saturday for an unofficial visit.
