"We're hoping to have him back pretty quick," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said during Wednesday's SEC teleconference. "We're not going to have him back this week, for sure, but next week is a possibility. Nothing has changed timetable-wise. Everything has went well.
"When we do get him back that will be a good addition."
A much needed addition too. Auburn was short on depth heading into the season and lost senior defensive back Joshua Holsey to a season-ending knee surgery against Jacksonville State last Saturday.
The Tigers had three true freshmen in the secondary at times against the Gamecocks.
"We lost one of our veteran guys so any addition right there will be nothing but help with depth because that's what you're concerned about," Malzahn said.
Davis tore the ACL in his knee during spring practice. He has played in 25 games mainly on special teams his first two seasons at Auburn but was expected to have a more important role in the playing rotation at cornerback this season.
No. 18 Auburn (2-0) will open SEC play at LSU (1-0) Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.
