AUBURN | Three of the state's top recruits were in Auburn on Thursday.
The Central-Phenix City trio of cornerback John Broussard, tight end/linebacker Jamal Couch and 2017 linebacker Markail Benton attended Auburn's afternoon practice and met with coaches.
"I had a great time at the practice," Benton, a 2017 Rivals100 to Watch linebacker, said. "This is one of the first practices I've seen and I liked the way they got physical. They have some great linebackers."
Broussard, the No. 13-ranked cornerback in 2016, had seen it all before. He visited last Friday and returned Saturday to watch practice.
"(Today) was not much different (than Saturday)," Broussard said. "Saturday was probably a little more intense."
Broussard liked watching new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and new secondary coach Travaris Robinson.
"How they interact with the players, they get all in to it," Broussard said. "They show them how to do everything."
The two coaches could have a big impact on Broussard's decision. He plans to announce it May 7, and the three visits in the last week have helped Auburn's chances of being his pick.
"I have grown to love Auburn," Broussard said. "It being so I have been able to get over here and get to know everybody. With (Muschamp and Robinson) coaching on the defense, I feel like I could come and fit right in with it."
Broussard next plans to visit Florida State next weekend, Mississippi State on April 18 and Kentucky on April 25.
Benton, already 6-foot-1 and 224 pounds, announced his early top five shortly after leaving Auburn on Thursday. The Tigers made the cut, as did Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Mississippi State.
"I like the school, the atmosphere, the team, the coaches … it's just great up here," Benton said of Auburn. "Coach Muschamp is a good coach. Coach T-Rob (Robinson) has a whole lot of energy.
"It should be a whole lot better defense than last year."
Benton plans to join Broussard next weekend at Florida State, a school where Couch, the three-star outside linebacker/tight end, is committed.
Couch, 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, doesn't have an offer from Auburn, but the Tigers are showing interest. An offer from Auburn could change his recruitment. The three high school teammates and friends have talked about continuing to play together in college.
"(An offer from Auburn) would be another great accomplishment and one of my childhood dreams," Couch said. "We always have said we would stay together. I think that would be a real big impact on our lives."
