AUBURN | Markaviest Bryant was ready to make a commitment, even if it was a private one between him and the Georgia coaches.

But Bryant, who is ranked the No. 21 weakside defensive end, decided to wait.

“I was real close,” Bryant said. “But I got out and saw and experienced more so I backed off.”

Bryant’s experiences included visits to LSU and Alabama last week, and a half-day visit to Auburn on Sunday. He said after the Auburn visit that he no longer is considering ending his recruitment early.

“It will probably be late in the season,” Bryant said.

Bryant, who is from Crisp County High in Cordele, Ga., spoke to Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown during his visit. The two have at least one thing in common, Bryant learned. They both nearly committed to the in-state Bulldogs.

“(Brown) was telling me that he was going to commit to Georgia,” Bryant said. “But deep in his heart he wanted to come here to Auburn.”

Bryant said he understands Brown’s decision better after spending Sunday afternoon in Auburn.

“It was about getting me around campus, showing me things I hadn’t seen,” Bryant said. “It was real important. They showed me around and even though everybody (students) wasn’t here, I really got that home feeling again.”

Bryant already plans to return to Auburn at least two more times before making a commitment. He will attend the Tigers season opener against Clemson and also be back for an official visit.

“They will get an official,” Bryant said. “I got to come back fishing with Coach T-Will (Travis Williams) and also spend time with Coach (Gus) Malzahn at his house.”

Bryant, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 235 pounds, plans to announce a top 7 on July 31. He’ll wait before making a commitment, whether it be private or public.

“I want to see more,” Bryant said.

Last week was a good start.
