AUBURN | Bruce Pearl had to have liked what he saw Sunday from his 2017 point guard commitment, Davion Mitchell.

Everyone else did at Auburn’s Elite Camp.

Mitchell, from Liberty County High in Georgia, slashed defenses for easy lay-ups, stopped and popped 3-point shots from all angles and spaghetti-legged wanna-be defenders with his ball-handling skills.

“I think I did pretty good,” Mitchell said.

It was the understatement of the day.

Many fellow campers tried to stop Mitchell, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 190 pounds. All failed. It’s why Mitchell is regarded as one of the top players in the country, why Rivals ranks him the No. 34 overall player and No. 8 point guard in the class. He’s tough to contain.

“I just tried to do my best and have fun,” Mitchell said. “There were a lot of great players out there, a lot of great competition.”

That included junior shooting guard Will Richardson, someone Mitchell knows well.

“He’s my teammate (at Liberty County)” Mitchell said. “He did really good. He stood out to me today and showed me something.”

Just not as much as Mitchell showed everyone else. It would have been a tough task. Mitchell drew “oohs” and “ahhs” from bystanders, including players from the other teams. "Oh my God" could be heard constantly from observers.

It was that type of performance, that type of day.

“It was fun,” Mitchell said. “I enjoyed it.”

Mitchell was one of three Auburn commitments at the camp. Five-star center recruit Austin Wiley and four-star forward recruit Chuma Okeke also were there.

Rivals currently ranks the trio the No. 1 class in the country.

“I feel really good about this class,” Mitchell said. “We feel we will have a lot of success at Auburn.”

And NCAA Tournament appearances aren’t the goal, not the main one.

“We see championships,” Mitchell said. “We don’t see Final Fours. We see championships in our future.”

Mitchell will return to Auburn for an official visit Sept. 2-4. He plans to sign with the Tigers on Nov. 9.

“I’ll sign the first day of the signing period,” Mitchell said. “I don’t have any doubts. Auburn is where I want to be.”
