AUBURN | Grenada (Miss.) safety CJ Avery wasn’t surprised by anything he experienced during his official visit to Auburn over the weekend.

“I came and saw what I expected,” Avery said. “It was nice.”

Avery, whom Rivals ranks the No. 32 safety in the 2017 class, arrived in Auburn on Saturday with his mother and was in the crowd that night for the Tigers’ thrilling 18-13 win over LSU.

“The defense played great,” Avery said. “Everybody on the defense played with a lot of passion. You want to play with guys that are passionate about what they do.”

Avery also liked the passion of the sold-out crowd inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“It was wild,” Avery said. “The crowd, once they found out that Auburn won, it was wild. The stadium was crazy. The atmosphere was great.”

Avery also spent a majority of his stay in Auburn with the Tigers’ defensive backs coach, Wesley McGriff. Auburn’s first-year coach is a big reason why Avery has interest in Auburn.

“My relationship with Coach McGriff is great, and that is very important because he’s the guy I’d be seeing everyday,” Avery said. “He’s the one that makes the calls for the DBs. We have a great relationship. I really like him.”

Avery also likes Auburn. The Tigers moved into his top three after the visit, joining both in-state SEC schools, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

“Auburn is just as high as my top schools,” Avery said. “Auburn made its way to getting in my top three.”

Avery, whose player host was cornerback Carlton Davis, doesn’t plan to make a decision until after the season. He took an official visit to Cal last weekend and plans to visit Clemson and Louisville, although dates have not been set.
