Victor Valley Community College (Calif.) defensive end Dougladson Subtyl has heard a lot about Auburn. His younger cousin, Johnson Dore, has made sure of it.
So when Subtyl spoke to Auburn linebackers coach Lance Thompson on Tuesday, there was no need for small talk.
"Coach Thompson said they needed me, wanted me to come for an official visit and then offered me," Subtyl said.
Subtyl, 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, didn't hesitate to respond. He's always wanted to see what Dore, who is a senior at Flagler-Palm Coast (Fla.), has been trying to describe.
"I told Coach Thompson that I'd definitely take an official visit," Subtyl said. "My cousin (Dore) loves Auburn. He talks about Auburn all day long. He says it's beautiful at Auburn. The campus and stadium are beautiful.
"He says Auburn has great coaches, and the players and the fans are great, too. I just want to see it for myself."
Subtyl's visit to Auburn would be either late in the season or after the season, but before he makes his commitment. Auburn will be one of his finalists. His conversation Tuesday with Thompson assured it.
"Coach Thompson said that they need some help," Subtyl said. "He said that I would play a hybrid defensive end/linebacker, that I would be down sometimes and other times I'd be covering backs, dropping into coverage.
"It all sounded good. That fits me perfectly."
Subtyl has posted impressive stats through five games this season. He's leading Victor Valley with 27 tackles, including 15 solos. He also has team-highs in tackles-for-loss (12.5), sacks (9.5) and forced fumbles (2). He's even broken up three passes.
Auburn, Arizona State, Kansas State, Baylor, Cal, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Missouri, Oregon State and Kansas are some of the schools that have offered Subtyl. He'll take an official visit to Auburn, and has two others already scheduled. Subtyl will visit Arizona State this weekend and Kansas State the weekend of Nov. 21-23.
"I don't really have a list of favorites right now," Subtyl said. "I just want to go somewhere for two years and get a great education and play football."
Subtyl, who was born in Haiti, graduated from Flagler-Palm Coast in Florida, the same school his cousin Dore attends. Subtyl expects to graduate from Victor Valley in the spring and transfer to a four-year school in the summer.
"I will probably wait until after the season and after I take my visits before I know which one," Subtyl said.
