4-star CB commits to Auburn

Christian Tutt knew before he left an official visit to Auburn on Sunday that he wanted to play college ball on the Plains.

On Tuesday, he made it official.

Tutt, a four-star cornerback from Thomson, Ga., announced his commitment to the Tigers during a ceremony at Thomson High School.

Tutt committed to Auburn after considering offers from Ohio State, Nebraska, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma and Notre Dame, among others. He took official visits to Ohio State, Nebraska and USC in September, but trimmed his list to Auburn and Ohio State before choosing the Tigers.

Tutt is the first cornerback to commit to Auburn in the 2018 class.

“Without any corners in this class, they need me to come in as a mid-year and get into the system,” Tutt said Sunday.

Tutt intends to. He’ll graduate high school in December and enroll at Auburn in January. Tutt will arrive on campus with high hopes for his freshman season.

“I’m going to get on the weights, get into spring ball and then get to the season and hope I’ll be a starter,” Tutt said. “I’m trying to get on the field early."

Tutt’s trip to Auburn over the weekend made his decision an easy one. He was joined on the two-night visit by his father, uncle and two brothers. Tutt learned all he needed to during his stay, and also saw first-hand as Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia, 40-17.

“It was an eyeopener for me,” Tutt said. “It showed me everything that I needed to see. I know their schemes. I know exactly what defenses they’re running. I know exactly where they want me to be, exactly what I need to do to come in and be successful and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Tutt’s relationships with area recruiter Travis Williams, defensive backs coach Greg Brown, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and coach Gus Malzahn played roles in his decision. So did Auburn’s defense on Saturday, which held Georgia to 46 yards rushing and 184 yards passing.

“Coach (Kevin) Steele does a great job with the defense,” Tutt said. “That’s what I want to be a part of.”

Tutt, who stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 180 pounds, also could play nickelback and return punts at Auburn, in addition to cornerback.

Tutt is Auburn’s 15th commitment in the 2018 class and fifth from the state of Georgia.

“I’m not that far from home, so my parents can come up and see me play,” Tutt said.

As a senior, Tutt had 36 tackles, including 30 solos, one interception, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He scored 11 total touchdowns, including five rushing and four receiving, and returned one punt and one kickoff for scores.
