Cougs Trampled In Corvallis
Redshirt freshman quarterback Marshall Lobbestael tossed a 29-yard completion to senior receiver Brandon Gibson on the first offensive play of the game for the Washington State University football team - but that was one of two offensive highlights of the half and the game for the Cougars as they lost to Oregon State 66-13 at the Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Wazzu kept the nation's second-longest scoring streak alive at 280 games [second to Michigan's 294].
The Beavers notched four first downs in their first four offensive plays of the game and jumped out to a quick and relatively easy 21-0 first quarter lead after repeatedly victimizing Cougar defensive back Romeo Pellum on two touchdown passes . Wazzu finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter after linebacker Myron Beck intercepted Beaver quarterback Lyle Moevao - one of four picks the Cougars had off Moevao - and returned it to the Beaver 36-yard line. From there, Lobbestael hit Jeshua Anderson with a pass to put the ball inside the five-yard line and the running back Chantz Staden ran it in for six [sophomore kicker Nico Grasu missed the extra point]. Wazzus was able to get another quick score on the board in the quarter when freshman linebacker Louis Bland picked off a Moevao pass and ran it back 16 yards for the score to make it 21-13.
But that was as close as the Cougars could get. Oregon State added a field goal for the 24-13 halftime lead, then rolled over the Cougars, 42-0 in the second half.
The Cougars, meanwhile, lost yet another quarterback as Lobbestael went down in the fourth quarter with a knee injury and freshman walk-on Daniel Wagner was forced into action to finish out the game as the coaching staff decided not to burn the redshirt of J.T. Levenseller.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-6 overall and remain winless at 0-4 in conference play.
Wazzu plays at Martin Stadium against USC next Saturday at 12:30 pm.
