Before injury, Patterson was living up to hype

The Rivals.com Five-Star Freshman Tracker is a look at how the top players in the Class of 2007 Rivals150 are faring in college. It will be updated each Tuesday throughout basketball season.

This Week's Featured Five-Star Freshman

Patrick Patterson's promising freshman season came to a close last week when Kentucky announced he would miss the final three regular-season games and the postseason with a stress fracture in his left ankle.

"I was shocked," Patterson said at a news conference Friday. "They told me I had to wear a cast for six-to-eight weeks. I started crying when I found out I couldn't play for the rest of the season."

He wraps up the year as the only freshman in the top 10 in the SEC in scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg). He shot 57.4 percent and averaged more than 35 minutes per game, including eight games in which he played at least 40 minutes.

"I was disappointed for Patrick and for Kentucky's team," said Georgia coach Dennis Felton, whose Bulldogs are one of only two teams to face Patterson twice. "He's a big, big, big part of their attack. Patrick is a good young man, and he's one of the best players in the country.

"One of the reasons he was having such a special season, one of the reasons he's so good, is because of his effort. He plays with relentless effort, and that's rare for any player. Everyone should strive for it, but it's especially rare for a freshman. I admire Patrick a lot not only for his talent and ability but my admiration reaches a new level because he plays so hard. I respect that and appreciate that. You always hate to see a player go down, but especially a player who gives it up not just every game but every possession."
