Pac-Tending 02-27-08

"The Pac-10 has been in the forefront of the movement to increase the numbers of minorities and women in coaching and administrative positions in intercollegiate athletics."

- Pac-10 conference commissioner, Tom Hansen, commenting on the conference's recent adoption of a policy to fund diversity initiatives designed to enhance searches for ethnic minorities and female candidates when filling coaching and administrative positions at member institutions.



Hoops season continues at the Creek and five Pac-10 teams - three men's team [UCLA, Stanford and Wazzu] and two women's teams [Stanford and California] are still populating the polls.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the NCAA Division I women's soccer committee has recommended a regional re-alignment - increasing from six regions to eight - to ensure that all conference teams remain in their regions.





Oregon

In men's hoop, the Ducks were swept by USC and UCLA to fall to 15-12 overall and 6-9 in conference play with a 56 RPI.




WSU

In men's hoop, 17th-ranked Wazzu defeated Arizona State but lost to Arizona to move to 21-6 overall and 9-6 in conference play with a 28 RPI.

In women's hoop, the Cougars defeated Arizona but lost to Arizona State to move to 5-22 overall and 2-14 in Pac-10 play with a 296 RPI.

In tennis, 44th-ranked Wazzu defeated Boise State and Gonzaga but lost to California and Stanford to move to 9-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In baseball, Wazzu defeated Creighton in two of three games and UNLV in the first games of their series, to open their season at 3-1 overall.

In volleyball, head coach Brian Heffernan resigned.



Arizona State

In women's hoop, junior forward Lauren Lacey was named as the conference's player of the week.



Arizona

In men's hoop, redshirt junior forward Mohamed Tangara will leave the team to either pursue a professional career overseas or transfer to a Division II school where he will be immediately eligible to play.



California

In men's hoop, the Bears lost to rival Stanford to drop to 15-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play with a 76 RPI.



USC

In men's hoop, freshman guard O.J. Mayo was named as the conference's player of the week.



UCLA

In men's hoop, the Bruins swept Oregon and Oregon State to improve to 24-3 overall and 14-2 in conference play with a 9 RPI.



Washington

In men's hoop, the Huskies lost to Arizona State but defeated Arizona to move to 15-13 overall and 6-9 in conference play with a 120 RPI.



Oregon State

In men's hoop, the Beavers remained winless in conference play, dropping games to USC and UCLA to fall to 6-21 overall and 0-15 in conference play with a 248 RPI.



Stanford

In men's hoop, the Cardinal defeated rival California to improve to 22-4 overall and 11-3 in conference play with a 20 RPI.
