Pac-Tending 01-30-08

"Normal reinstatement guidelines call for a withholding condition of 20 percent of competition based on the dollar value of the two tickets, to a charity of his choice as a condition. However, when determining the specifics of this individual case, the NCAA staff determined that repayment without withholding from competition was warranted since the university provided information that the student-athlete first asked his coach if he could accept the tickets offered to him and was [mistakenly] told it would be permissible."

- Statement from NCAA Associate Director of Public and Media Relations Stacy Osburn, regarding USC freshman O.J. Mayo's acceptance of free NBA game tickets earlier this month.

Hoops season continues at the Creek and both men's and women's teams are still populating the national rankings as seven conference teams are receiving votes with three teams [Washington State, UCLA and Stanford] in the men's Top 25 and two more [Stanford and California] are in the women's Top 25.

The Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament will feature "Ladies Night Out" [March 8] and "Dads and Daughters" [March 9] events during the post-season tournament.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the NCAA has determined that USC freshman men's hoop guard O.J. Mayo will not be required to miss any competition this season for accepting free tickets to an NBA game, a secondary rules violation.
