Mt. Vernon Alarms New Rochelle

As you pass the security of New Rochelle's finest, you enter the battleground of a packed standing room only gymnasium. The occasion? Westchester's oldest rivalry.

The Mt. Vernon Knights versus The New Rochelle Huguenots. On this night however, the Knights won the war on the court with a close 62 - 57 win over the Huguenots.

In attendance for Thursdays game was Anthony Mason, former New York Knick, there to support his son, Antoine Mason, a 6-2 sophomore guard for the Huguenots. New Rochelle's also most notable player however was Markell Rice, a 6-0 senior guard as well as a star wide receiver for the football team and brother of Ray Rice, wide receiver top pick for Rutgers University.

The first quarter of the game was intense both teams ending with the score tied at 20 apiece with, 6-4 senior forward Eddie Egbuta taking control for New Rochelle and Kevin Jones and Sherrod Wright countering for Mt. Vernon.

The second quarter of the game belonged to Jones scoring eight points. The teams fought valiantly in the third and into well into the four but the action abruptly subsided with the score 50 -41 in favor of Mount Vernon and with five minutes left in the game.

Apparently, a fire alarm was set off and everyone was instructed to leave the building immediately. The crowd became unmanageable as extra security and firefighters rushed to the scene. Whether the game would be continued, no one knew, as the players from both teams waited in the locker rooms below.

After a half hour of determining the cause of the fire alarm the Mount Vernon Knights took the court with the unruly New Rochelle fans chanting at them. When asked of his thoughts were regarding the occurrence, Mt. Vernon coach Bob Cimmino responded, "The fire alarm is indicative of the craziness going on. We just try to except it." The intense match up resumed with Mount Vernon still lead the score. Down to the last second of the game New Rochelle would not let go they gave it their all like true rivals however the Knight would go on to win.

Top scorers of were Kevin Jones with 24 points and wingman Sherrod Wright with 21 points for Mt. Vernon. Antoine Mason was high scorer with 13 points for New Rochelle followed by Markell Rice with 10 points.
