Coble taking leave from Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore Kevin Coble said Monday he will take an indefinite leave from the basketball team to be with his mother, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
The 6-foot-8 forward, who led the team in scoring (13.4) and rebounding (5.2) as a freshman, will "return to the men's basketball program when he feels the time is appropriate," the team said in a statement.
Coble will remain enrolled at Northwestern while his mother undergoes treatment in his hometown of Phoenix, Coble said.
"During this time, I want to be there with her," said Coble, who thanked his teammates, coaches and the faculty for understanding his decision. "I am looking forward to getting back on the court at the conclusion of my mom's treatments so that I can have my biggest fan back in the stands."
Wildcats coach Bill Carmody said the team supports Coble's decision to be with his mother "and we will welcome him back whenever he feels ready to return."
