Powell in action
New Freedom (Pa.) Susquehannock cornerback/safety Chaz Powell will be representing the Keystone State in the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 6-foot-1, 184-pounder is honored to be able to show off his skills in the all-star game.
Rivals.com is the official selection partner for the game, which will be televised live on ESPNU.
"Being invited proves that all my hard work and dedication is really starting to pay off. I give credit to my coaches for giving me this opportunity and pushing me to do what I needed to. I hope to represent them, my teammates and the school well in the game."
While he's honored to be invited, Powell isn't focused on proving anything in the game.
"I'm not about the press," he said. "I get a lot of it because of my play, but I take this as another opportunity to go out and play football. It's a great chance for me to get ready for college and I'm really going to focus on improving my skills. I really can't wait just to get back out on the field and play football again."
The three-star prospect committed to Penn State back in July and may try to put in a good word about the Nittany Lions to some uncommitted recruits while at the game.
"The coaches from Penn State have already talked to me about one player from Arkansas," he said. "I think they'd like me to put in a good word for them. I think I'll look to just tell them why I'm going to Penn State."
This season Powell was a force in all three aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams.
"I finished the year earning all-state as a running back by rushing for over 1,000 yards and 19 touchdowns," he said. "On special teams I had two kickoff returns for touchdowns, while on defense I recorded 50 tackles and two interceptions. This year I was more of a leader for my team. I think I developed much better chemistry with my teammates and took the focus of the team first."
