2006 Reebok ABCD Camp Player Eval: Corey Fisher

Teaneck, N.J. -- Corey Fisher, Class of 2007, 6'1", Point Guard from St. Patrick's (NJ) and the Long Island Lightning AAU program gave a verbal commitment to Villanova in January. He was in action at the 2006 Reebok ABCD Camp this past weekend and VUSports was on-hand to witness all seven of his games. His performance throughout the camp was up and down but he capped off the weekend on a very high note with a dominating 28 point and 6 assist performance in the All-Star game earning MVP honors.

The most stacked position at this year's ABCD Camp may very well have been the point guard slot. Stud performers like Derrick Rose, Brandon Jennings, Corey Chandler and Johnny Flynn all participated in the camp and Corey Fisher had the opportunity to go head-to-head with most all of them.

Fisher is coming off a knee injury. It may have been advisable for him to skip the camp and either rest his knee or work himself back into better playing shape. However, Corey didn't want to pass on the opportunity to participate in the camp again so he decided to lace them up and give it a go.

In his first game, he struggled in the first half against the ultra-athletic Derrick Rose. He redeemed himself in the second half but the first game was a harbinger of what became a rather up and down performance throughout the camp.

Fisher fought to a draw against Edwin Rios, played wonderfully against Anthony Crater, held his own against Jennings despite a poor shooting performance, struggled a bit in his game against Flynn, was mediocre against Demetri McCarney and then didn't look for his own offense much at all against Isaiah Thomas on Sunday morning.

Strengths: Corey is a pure, old school point guard. He has wonderful court vision and makes good decisions in transition. He is a capable creator off the bounce who prefers to go to his left. He has a decent three-point shooting stroke but he didn't shoot the long ball much. He uses hesitation dribbles and crafty body control to penetrate the lane for the pass or the shot. Defensively, Corey has good anticipation to disrupt passing lanes and strip unsuspecting ball-handlers of the rock.

Weaknesses: Fisher struggled to finish in the lane this week. He got his shot blocked too frequently which contributed to his shooting a higher percentage beyond the arc than he did inside of it. Fisher is not fast with the ball baseline-to-baseline he relies more on court sense and knowledge of the game than jet-like speed to do damage in transition. Last year, when healthier, Corey was quicker allowing him to be more effective on the break and more tenacious defensively. He also has a tendency to let his dribble get too high.
