Matthews another Oaks Christian star
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - With stars all over the field some times it's easy to overlook some of the other players on the team. But at Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian that's not so tough because the "other players" are also going to be players that get Division I attention.
Outside linebacker Casey Matthews probably falls into that other player category.
While he might not have the household name like Jimmy Clausen or Marc Tyler, he's going to be heavily recruited also. And it's something that has him excited.
"I'm excited about what my future might hold," Matthews, who is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, said. "I'd like to play professional ball, but if I'm not doing that I'm not sure what I'll be doing. I'd like to be doing something with athletics."
Matthews hopes to first help Oaks Christian go out undefeated this season and then play big again in 2006 when the team will play two games on ESPN and face a more national schedule.
"There is a lot of pressure here," Matthews said. "You just have to go out and try to work the hardest and do the best that you can. You come out and show what you have and it'll be all right in the end."
So why is Matthews a Division I prospect?
"I'm good at tackling," he said. "I can read, I can cover and I can do a little bit of everything. The coaches say I have a real good nose for the football, and I'm a winner, too."
Matthews is already getting mail from Arizona State, Oregon, Cal, South Carolina and Washington.
"I'm getting stuff from all over the map," he said. "I think it's kind of cool."
