LSI Saturday Morning Recaps

Jefferson 60, Verbum Dei 55
Pinning two of the top programs on the West Coast, Verbum Dei (CA) and Jefferson (CA) met together in the best game of the consolation bracket at the Les Schwab Invitational in Portland, Oregon.

Despite out shooting and out rebounding Jefferson, Verbum Dei couldn't overcome their 25 turnovers and poor free throw shooting (14-27 FT).

Jefferson's 6-foot-8 junior power forward Brian Morris and Verbum Dei's 6-foot-8 sophomore power forward Matt Shaw matched up in one of the tournament's best big man battles.

Shaw did a great job of fronting in the first half Morris in the post and cut off the entry pass to the big fella. But Morris was able to use an effective baby hook en route to his team high 16 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes of play. Shaw had another solid game, scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds.

Cedric Burton added 11 points despite his cold shooting (3-14 FG). Verbum Dei got 19 points from senior guard Michael Pagan.

Georgetown Prep (DC) 75, Redmond (OR) 63
Once again, no one could stop the height advantage of 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert, Jr.. The future Georgetown Hoya led Prep with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. In previous games, Hibbert could just lay the ball in with little trouble. Today, he worked well in the post and had some impressive post moves and an occasional hook shot.

Aris Williams connected on back-to-back three pointers to open the game and finished with 14 points on 4-9 shooting from the floor. The 6-foot-8 small forward did a little big of everything, grabbing six boards and had four assists.

Finally. Davis Nwankwo put in 14 points in 16 minutes of work. The 6-foot-9 forward was in foul trouble for the entire game but did a good job of getting into position once Redmond doubled down on Hibbert. Nwankwo played with more aggressiveness and had a bit more energy today.

Redmond's only answer seemed to come from the perimeter as they hit 10 of their 20 three point shots attempted. Matt McGowan struck on five three pointers and finished with a game high 25 points. Nike Johnson added four three pointers and had 14 points on the game.

Maarty Leunen had a hard time inside against Hibbert, shooting five of 16 from the floor, but did manage to score 13 points and pulled seven rebounds.

Other notes from Saturday: DJ White finally had a DJ White game, scoring a tournament single game high 34 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds and had six emphatic blocks against Marist (OR)…Hillsboro's Brad Hodge, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, continued to pick apart opponents by going for 26 points and eight rebounds…Verbum Dei has left the tournament early because of religious reasons, citing that they do not play on Sunday. LSI officials said they were not aware of their desires to play on the last day of the event, causing a bit of confusion and were forced to cancel Verbum Dei's game against Benson.
