LSI Thursday Morning Session Recap

Lincoln 70, Hillsboro 57
Mark Robinowitz scored 20 points to led the Cardinals in the opening game of the 2003 Les Schwab Invitational. The 6-foot-1 guard sunk all seven of his free throws and helped seal the victory. 5-foot-10 junior point guard Omar Leary created well for himself and others en route to his 10 points and five assists.

Colin Halberg scored a quiet eight points and pulled eight rebounds. The The solid bodied big man go flustered inside in traffic and plays a bit sheepish against strong bodies. There were, however, some college assistants in attendance that were intrigued by his potential.

To Halberg's credit, he is a good high post passer. He'll have is biggest test tomorrow. Literally. Lincoln plays Georgetown Prep - a team that features a front line of 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert, 6-foot-10 Davis Nwankwo and 6-foot-9 Aris Williams.

LaTravis Turner got by with his athleticism in the game and attacked the basket for a solid, well-rounded nine points, nine rebounds and four assists.

For Hillsboro, James Loe connected for 12 points, nine assists and three steals. The future Eastern Washington player gave a gutsy effort but couldn't get past the pesky backcourt defense from Lincoln.

6-foot-8 junior Brad Hodge led the way for the Spartans with 18 points and eight rebounds. He has a nice college small forward body and is a bit slow of foot but he has a nice form on shot.

Lake Oswego 64, Sunset 57
Kevin Love, a 6-foot-8 dynamic freshman, didn't have much of a challenge inside as he went off for 30 points (13-15 FG), 18 rebounds, five blocks. Sunset's Sam Rayburn, who is Cal-bound, didn't play because of injury but Love will get his true test tomorrow against reigning Mr. Oregon Basketball Maarty Leunen.

Love wowed everyone in attendance with his passing skills, high basketball IQ, great nose for the rebound and overall post skills. It was our first time to watch the freshman but we don't hesitate to say he will contend for top honors in his class nationally. Love has that swagger that only the great ones have already. A lot will be said and written over the next four years regarding this talented youngster. Count on that.

Even without Rayburn, Sunset got a great game from 6-foot-5 senior Sharrad Watson. The rail thin wing scored a team high 20 points on 7-16 shooting from the field. Watson is garnering interest from low majors. 6-foot-1 Josh Jackson added 12 points and six steals. He is a favorite to stay home for Portland State.

Redmond 53, Benson 49
Future Oregon Duck Maarty Leunen looked strong as he had a double-double (18 points, 15 rebounds) in Redmond's opening game. Leunen handles the ball like a guard, in fact he brings the ball up the court on offense. Oregon picked up a very solid player from their own backyard. He'll have a test tomorrow when he faces off against the aforementioned Love.

Nike Johnson not only won our award for best name in the tourney, he also scored 18 hard earned points on seven of 10 shooting.

Benson's Bryan Martin had a great 20 point performance thanks to his nice looking jumper. The 6-foot-3 awfully thin wing guard got a lot of help from fellow senior DeShawn McKenzie who scored on three three-pointers in the second half. McKenzie finished with 13 points.

Jesuit 63, Marist 35
Jesuit, the No. 1 team in the state of Oregon, had very little trouble getting by Marist in the last game of the morning session. Sophomore Seth Tarver led the way with 12 pints and six rebounds while Doug Riehl came off the bench for 13 points in just 14 minutes or work. It was no match from the opening tip as Jesuit outrebounded Marist 54-30.
