The final piece of the five-star puzzle for the first set of rankings for the Class of 2004 is in place. Rivals.com is proud to award five-star status to four more players, including two Golden State nuggets, another star from the Land of Lincoln and the top player in the state of New Jersey.

Earning five-star status and being named as the nation’s No. 21 player is the latest player in the Concord (Calif.) De La Salle football pipeline. This time around it’s Cameron Colvin, a 6-foot-2, 191-pound receiver.

At his size, his speed is amazing. He’s been clocked at 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash and can easily bust off consistent 4.4-second times.

When Rivals100.com’s Rick Kimbrel first saw Colvin in Hawaii last September, he made catches that were reminiscent of the great hall famer for the Pittsburgh Steelers Lynn Swann. Colvin’s Godfather thought the same thing.

“I didn’t even know who Lynn Swann was,” Colvin said. “My Godfather went out and found some tapes on Swann. Swann was great. I can see some comparisons now.”

Another Golden State gem is ranked right behind Colvin at the No. 22 spot.

Earning five-star status is Hayward, Calif., standout defensive end Phillip Mbakogu, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound pass rushing machine.

“We move Phillip all over the place,” Hayward coach Casey Moreno said. “A lot of our opponents wait to see what side of line Phillip lines up on and they run their plays accordingly.

“The biggest compliment that Phillip received and because he’s quiet humble kid the only one he will ever talk about was when Concord (Calif.) De La Salle head coach Bob Ladouceur said that their entire offensive scheme consisted of running away from Phillip’s side.

That is quite a compliment coming from the coach from arguably the best high school team in history.”

Chicago is home to the nation’s No. 23 player and next five-star selection.

Hubbard High in Chicago is home to Chris Patterson, a strapping 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker that could project as either an inside or outside linebacker because of his size, speed and nose for the football.

“Colleges have been waiting for three years to recruit this kid,” Rivals100.com analyst Tim O’Halloran said. “He’s been one of the best in the Midwest and the nation for quite some time now.”

No. 24 and the final five-star selection in the first batch of rankings is the top player in New Jersey – Brian Toal of Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep.

“Brian has been outstanding for us on offense and defense since ninth grade,” said Greg Toal, the coach at Don Bosco Prep, said. “But most of the schools that have contacted us this spring have given us an indication they believe his best position in college will be at either an inside or outside linebacker position. All the schools that have contacted us this spring have indicated to our coaching staff that they believe Brian is the best player on the best team in the state of New Jersey for the 2003 season.”

And with the state of New Jersey loaded year in and year out, that’s enough said.
