Barbee out

AUBURN | Tony Barbee is out as Auburn's head coach.

He was fired within an hour of the Tigers' 74-56 loss to South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday. The Tigers finished the season 14-16 overall -- the fourth time during Barbee's four seasons in which the program failed to hit the .500 mark.

Barbee amassed a record of 49-75 overall record during his stint on the Plains. His winning percentage in conference games (26.5) is the lowest for an Auburn coach since V.J. Edney during the 1940s.

"I believe we should compete for championships in men's basketball," athletic director Jay Jacobs told AuburnTigers.com. "It's time for somebody else to have a turn. We need to find somebody to come in here and take what we have here now and put some more in and compete for SEC titles."

Auburn is contractually obligated to pay Barbee $750,000 per season through June 2017 as part of his initial employment agreement signed in 2011.

Jacobs said the search for a successor will begin immediately.
