Sturghill makes it official

After narrowing his list to two schools -- Wisconsin and Missouri -- Cornelius Sturghill has made his final decision.

The 5-foot-11, 179-pound projected cornerback from Memphis (TN) Melrose committed to the Badgers on Friday, just one day after an in-home visit with assistant coaches Chad Kauha'aha'a and Ben Strickland.

"I just felt it was time to get it off my chest," Sturghill told BadgerBlitz.com. "I feel my future is going to be bright in Madison."

The three-star prospect, who chose UW over offers from UCLA, Mississippi State, Purdue and Vanderbilt, among others, is the Badgers' second projected cornerback in the 2014 recruiting class, joining two-star Derrick Tindal.

"I've talked to him (Kauha'aha'a) and coach (Ben) Strickland and they both we're telling me they feel I can go up to Wisconsin and play right away, early," Sturghill said. "I'm pretty sure you don't see Memphis players playing for Wisconsin. If I was to go there I'm a firm believer that it will open up doors for all the younger players under me."

Sturghill's head coach, Eddie Woods, saw his star player perform well on both sides of the ball but feels cornerback is his best position at the next level.

"I know he brings a lot of upside with the athleticism to both sides of the ball and Wisconsin is getting a very versatile player," Woods told BadgerBlitz.com. "He was an all-district and all-state player at both safety and wide receiver for us.

"But I've always told me that I thought he would be a better corner. He's definitely a playmaker at receiver but with his size and his cover skills, he could be a hell of a corner. He's a very smart kid with great academics and I think he will adjust to that cornerback position very well."

Woods also feels he can step in and contribute right away. The Badgers return their top three corners from a season but need a boost at the position.

"He's never sat or waited for his turn," Woods said. "He played as a freshman in high school. I don't think it will be anything for him to go out there and compete right away."
