Auburn rolls in exhibition opener
AUBURN - Rob Chubb had a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead six Tigers in double figures as Auburn defeated Victory University 108-57 in its exhibition opener on Tuesday in Auburn Arena. Shaq Johnson added 15 points and Brian Greene Jr. had 12 assists.
"I think it is the first time we have scored 100 since I have been here, so that is a good sign," Auburn head coach Tony Barbee said. "Offensively, we have some guys that can put the ball in the basket and that makes the game easier. We have a chance and we have some athleticism. We should rebound better this year and we should score better. If we can get to the level defensively where we have to be, we can turn the corner."
Five-straight points by Jordan Price gave Auburn a 28-11 lead, and the Tigers stretched the run into a 20-4 burst following a layup by Chubb. Frankie Sullivan sandwiched a Shaq Johnson dunk with a trey and then a layup to give Auburn a 41-13 lead with 6:29 remaining in the first half.
Price hit his second 3-pointer of the night with just under four minutes left in the first half and the Tigers led 51-15. Auburn closed the half on an 18-5 run. Ten of 11 Tigers that played in the first half scored as Auburn led 61-20.
Auburn shot 56.6 percent (43-of-76) from the floor on the night, including hitting 9-of-22 3-pointers (40.9 percent). Noel Johnson and Sullivan both knocked down three 3-pointers.
A pair of dunks by Shaq Johnson and a layup by Price gave the Tigers a 50-point lead at 94-44 with 6:12 to go in the game.
Two free throws by Jordon Granger put the Tigers over the century mark at 101-44 with four minutes remaining. Granger and Price each scored 13, while Sullivan and Noel Johnson both added 11 points. Eleven Tigers scored in the game.
Jordan Miles led Victory with 16 points and eight rebounds.
