Louisville forward transferring to NU

The Wildcats' front line will get a big boost next season as Louisville forward Jared Swopshire will transfer to Northwestern for his fifth year.

The 6-foot-8 forward has played three years for the Cardinals. He will graduate in May and was looking for a program that would offer him more playing time for his final year.

Teddy Swopshire, Jared's father, told the Louisville Courier-Journal that Northwestern was the only school that his son visited when researching possible destinations.

"The opportunity is there for him to start," Teddy Swopshire said. "He's replacing (John) Shurna, so that's the style he's going for from an offensive and a playing style standpoint."

The St. Louis native played 13.3 minutes per game this season for the Cardinals, who made it to the Final Four before losing to eventual national champion Kentucky. He averaged 3.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in his reserve role.

Swopshire played 25 minutes and averaged 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2009-10. He then sat out the entire 2010-11 campaign with a groin injury.

Swopshire will be able to play for Northwestern immediately. The NCAA allows students who get their degree from their original school to transfer into a graduate program not offered by their first school without having to sit out a year.
