Davis and Holmes selected to East-West Shrine Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Former Southern Miss football players, quarterback Austin Davis and offensive lineman Lamar Holmes, have been chosen to play in the 87th annual East-West Shrine Game, Jan. 21, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Game time is set for 3 p.m., CT, and can be seen live on the NFL Network.

Both players will play for former collegiate and NFL coach Bobby Ross on the East squad and they are slated to be joined by fellow Conference USA alums, Lance Lewis (WR) and Emanuel Davis (DB) from East Carolina and Josh Linam (LB) from UCF.

Davis, a product of Meridian, Miss., broke every major season and career passing record during his time with the Golden Eagles. He started in every game he played, and posted a 30-15 record over 45 games as the school's starting quarterback.

Holmes, from Gastonia, N.C., played two seasons for the Golden Eagles at left tackle and appeared in 26 games. He started in 19 games, with 18 consecutive starts to end his career. Holmes also converted a two-point conversion during the 2011 campaign on a lateral from Davis.

The duo is the first Golden Eagles to play in the game since defensive back Leo Barnes played in the event in 2001. Prior to this season, 13 former Southern Miss players have participated in the game dating back to tackle Don Owens who saw action in the 1956 affair.
