Power rankings: Plenty of changes at top
Fredette and Walker have taken turns atop the point guard rankings over the past few weeks. Fredette moves back in front this week after scoring 43 points in a 71-58 victory over San Diego State and 32 in an 86-77 loss at New Mexico.
"They are led by as good a player as I have ever coached against," San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said of BYU. "He is just sensational and extremely hard to guard."
The constant shifts at point guard represented the only changes at the top of the power rankings each of the past two weeks, but the latest edition featured more upheaval.
Duke's 93-78 loss to St. John's on Sunday caused Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski and small forward Kyle Singler to fall from the top of the rankings. Duke's Nolan Smith maintained his status as the nation's No. 1 shooting guard after scoring 32 points against St. John's.
The new No. 1 small forward is Texas sophomore Jordan Hamilton, who recorded double-doubles in victories over Oklahoma State and Missouri. Hamilton delivered five assists and a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with his 16 points Saturday in a 71-58 triumph over Missouri.
"I thought Jordan Hamilton played the best game he has played since he has been at Texas," Longhorns coach Rick Barnes told reporters after the game. "I thought he had an all-around game. His passes were really good, and he played really well."
The new No. 1 coach is Ohio State's Thad Matta, who leads the last remaining unbeaten Division I team. Ohio State beat Purdue 87-64 on Tuesday and eked out a 58-57 victory at Northwestern on Saturday.
Arizona power forward Derrick Williams and Ohio State center Jared Sullinger joined Smith in continuing to lead their respective positions. Sullinger also maintained his status as the nation's No. 1 freshman.
This week's power rankings take into account all results through Sunday's games. The rankings put a special emphasis on recent performances while also taking career achievements into consideration.
