Scouting report: Washington at UCLA
Matchup: Washington Huskies (9-3, 1-0 Pac-10) at UCLA Bruins (9-4, 1-0)
Tip: Friday, 1 p.m. Pacific time, Pauley Pavilion.
TV, radio: FSN national television broadcast with Steve Physioc, Marques Johnson and Rebecca Haarlow. KJR 950-AM and the Husky IMG Sports Network with Bob Rondeau and Jason Hamilton.
Coaches: Lorenzo Romar, Washington (ninth year); Ben Howland, UCLA (eighth year).
Series: UCLA leads the all-time series, 91-37, and split with Washington last season. Romar, who used to be an assistant coach at UCLA, is 8-9 against the Bruins.
About the Huskies: Washington started its Pac-10 slate with a 73-67 overtime victory over USC for its school-record fifth consecutive conference road win. The Huskies have won eight conference games overall but sweeping the Los Angeles schools in L.A. has proven to be a daunting task. Washington has done it only twice: 1987 and 2006. Washington continues to improve in rebounding by starting a larger lineup. The Huskies outrebounded USC, 48-30. Redshirt freshman guard C.J. Wilcox missed the USC game with a staph infection in his right hip but was hoping to return against UCLA.
About the Bruins: UCLA has won six in a row after dropping four straight and is the hottest team in the Pac-10. Five Bruins average double-figure scoring, led by sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt, who is projected to be a first-round pick in the NBA Draft. The Bruins' front court is formidable with the addition of freshman and former Kentwood High School star Joshua Smith, who lost about 50 pounds over the summer.
