History repeats, but Warhawks Win
The Warhawks and the Owl might have only met six times in the brief series, but it's been one of the more exciting series, as the series has been decided by a combined 19 points, or three points per game. History repeated itself, to a degree, as the Warhawks (2-3, 1-1) got a 20-17 win on Saturday night over the visiting Owls (1-4, 0-2); the first by a home team in the series.
ULM jumped out to a 12-0 first half lead. Both teams failed to find the end zone in the first quarter, as both teams had turnovers inside the red zone. FAU drove to the ULM 13 and Owl quarterback Jeff Van Camp looked to put his team up on their first possession. Van Camp was intercepted at the one yard line by senior linebacker Theo Smith, but the Warhawks were unable to capitalize, as Radi Jabour missed a field goal from 23 yards out on the ensuing possession.
The Warhawk defense would hold the Owls to a three and out possession, but Kolton Browning fumbled to at the 19 yard line on the next drive.
In the second half, the Owl offense came alive as they rattled off 17 unanswered points throughout the third and early fourth quarter to take a 17-12 lead.
Van Camp and company looked to add to their lead, taking over with 6:53 remaining in the game. The drive would cross mid-field, but a center to quarterback exchange problem caused a fumble that was recovered by ULM's Eddie Vincent at the 45 yard line.
Browning then led a six play, 2:29 drive ending with running back Jyruss Edwards' first career score from five yards out, making the score 18-17. The score was also the first ULM TD by a running back this season. Browning gave the Warhawks the final three point margin with a two-point conversion pass to Brent Leonard.
The Warhawks now hit the road for a pair of road Sun Belt Conference games, traveling to Bowling Green, Ky. for a game against Western Kentucky. Kick off is scheduled for 6pm.
