Notebook: Red Wolves defeat Warhawks
Arkansas State Red Wolves defeated the ULM Warhawks 34-20 at ASU Stadium this past Saturday night.The
Several players did big things to help lead the Red Wolves to victory, and we are listing the key factors in today's notebook.
Arkansas State recorded their ninth largest crowd in ASU Stadium history with 23,176 people in attendance.
The Red Wolves improved to 30-10 all-time under coach Steve Roberts at ASU Stadium Saturday night's win was ASU's sixth straight victory in home openers, and Coach Roberts eighth home opener victory.
The Red Wolves improved to 18-14 all-time versus ULM.
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Aplin threw his fourth touchdown pass of the season, giving him one more scoring pass than he had all of last season. He also scored a rushing touchdown for his second straight game and posted a season-high 75 rushing yards.
Junior WR Dwayne Frampton found the end zone for his first time since week one against Auburn on a 34 yard pass from Aplin. He also had three carries for 26 yards.
True freshman WR Carlos McCants caught three passes to surpass his season-best total set at Auburn. He also caught a career-long 42 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to help set up a Red Wolf touchdown.
Wide receivers Dwayne Frampton and Anthony Robinson have caught at least one pass in all three games this season, while junior WR Rod Hall caught his first pass of the season, finishing the night with four receptions for 49 yards.
The Red Wolves recorded a season-high 234 rushing yards, a season-high three rushing touchdowns, and had four player's record season-high rushing totals. (Ryan Aplin, Derek Lawson, Phillip Butterfield, and Dwayne Frampton).
True freshman Sir Gregory Thornton recorded his first five rushing attempts of the season, picking up 30 yards with a long of 14 yards.
Junior running back Derek Lawson picked up his second rushing touchdown of the season with a 12 yard run in the first quarter. He ended the night with 10 carries for 52 yards.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Phillip Butterfield had eight carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. His longest carry of the night was for 23 yards.
ASU's 34 points against ULM were the most scored in a game since defeating Mississippi Valley State last season.
Senior safety M.D. Jennings picked up his first two interceptions of the season, giving him seven for his career, and his first game with multiple interceptions. The interceptions were also the first posted this season by any ASU football player.
Brandon Joiner picked up his first sack of the season.
Tausean Holmes recorded a career-high eight tackles, while Justin Robertson tied his career best with four tackles.
Rod Hall led the team with kickoff returns and return yards for the third straight game, finishing the night with three returns for 70 yards.
