Week 2 inside the numbers: Case study
Each week during the season, we look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing. Here is Here is this week's version:
1. Houston beat UTEP 54-24 last week. Houston's Case Keenum threw for 279 yards, and UTEP's Trevor Vittatoe threw for 340. They are the only current FBS quarterbacks with 10,000 career passing yards; Keenum has 13,503 and Vittatoe has 10,252, and they are among 62 FBS quarterbacks who have reached that plateau.
2. Staying with Keenum, his yardage total puts him fifth all time; he passed former N.C. State star Philip Rivers (13,484) with his performance against UTEP. Next up for Keenum is former Hawaii star Colt Brennan (14,193). Keenum is 3,569 yards away from tying former Hawaii QB Timmy Chang, the career leader with 17,072 yards. Keenum is 27 TD passes away from tying career leader Graham Harrell of Texas Tech; Harrell tossed 134 TD passes from 2005-08.
3. Florida, Idaho and Missouri already have forced nine turnovers each to tie for the national lead in that category. At the other end of the spectrum are New Mexico State, UCF and Wyoming, which haven't forced any (New Mexico State is the only team in the group that has played just once).
5. The top three rushers are well-known: Michigan QB Denard Robinson is No. 1, with Oklahoma State TB Kendall Hunter second and Kansas State TB Daniel Thomas third. At No. 4 is Western Kentucky's Bobby Rainey. He has rushed for 339 yards against Nebraska and Kentucky, which means he won't see a better defense the rest of the way. Good news for Rainey this week is that the Hilltoppers are playing Indiana, which gave up 227 rushing yards to FCS member Towson in its only game.
