BulldogBlitz Players of the Week

After each win, BulldogBlitz recognizes several players that had outstanding performances that played a major role in Mississippi State's win. Go inside to see who publisher Logan Lowery chose as the offensive, defensive, special teams, freshman and coach of the week were.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Quarterback Tyler Russell
Redshirt Freshman * 6-5 * 225 * Meridian, Miss.

Passing:
13-of-16 for 256 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions Rushing: one carry for negative-1 yard

Logan's take: No player in recent memory has made a more anticipated debut than Russell. The heralded Parade All-American and former Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year struggled in the spring game but could not have had a much better night when it counted. Russell showed poise in the pocket and directed the offense on a seven play, 91-yard drive in his first action off the bench. Russell is possibly the Bulldogs most hyped quarterback recruit in school history so to go out and tie a school record for touchdown passes in a single game will only add to the fans excitement and expectations.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Cornerback Maurice Langston
Senior * 5-10 * 180 * Meridian, Miss.

Defense:
one assisted tackle and two interceptions for 15 yards in return yardage.

Logan's take: Langston did not get the start at cornerback but did not let that effect him once he stepped foot on the field. He may have only had one tackle in the game but showed great instincts and concentration on his pair of pick offs. One of his interceptions set the Bulldogs up for a touchdown. While those two picks were the first of his career there will likely be plenty more before the season is over.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Long snapper Aaron Feld
Senior * 6-1 * 230 * Homewood, Ala.

Special teams:
12 snaps (seven extra points, four punts, one field goal)

Logan's take: Feld plays one of the most obscure positions on the roster and many fans have never even heard his name. But that's a credit to the job he does because nobody hears about the long snapper unless he messes up. Feld had a dozen opportunities Saturday night and with the exception of a punt snap that was a little high he had a perfect night. He set the sack record at Homewood High School so he's pretty good on the punt coverage unit too.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:

COACH OF THE WEEK:

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Les Koenning

Logan's take:
Koenning found success Saturday from two perspectives. His offense produced 569 yards which was the most for the Bulldogs since 1994. The offense also showed it had the ability to drive the ball moving the chains for 28 first downs on the night. His quarterbacks Russell and Chris Relf combined for 20-of-25 passing for 372 yards, five touchdowns and only one interception. It was the most passing yards MSU has had in two years.
