Player Countdown to Kickoff - No. 99
Spring Review: Geathers got a long, hard look at nose and new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham liked what he saw. The redshirt freshman showed great quickness despite his 6-6 frame, and from all indications has made the necessary improvement where he can now be counted on to become a key piece of the puzzle on the Bulldogs' defensive line.
Fall Preview: Junior DeAngelo Tyson is listed as the starter at nose for Georgia going into the fall, but barring injury, Geathers will play a huge role as well. Although he's still adapting to some of the 3-4 techniques, Geathers has been a quick study and coaches see no reason he can't become an integral player for the Bulldogs, who obviously need their young D-linemen to step up following the graduation of Geno Atkins, Jeff Owens and Kade Weston.
Others who wore No. 99: DE Jarius Wynn, DG Jake Richardson, DE Robert Goodwin, NG Chuck Kinnebrew.
Two current Bulldogs wear the 99 jersey and they couldn't be more different. One is a defensive lineman Kwame Geathers while the other is placekicker Jamie Lindley. Kwame stands 6'6" and weighs 326 lbs and Jamie is a mere 5'11" and tips the scales at 170 lbs.
Another defensive lineman wore 99 in recent years. David Jacobs, a solid contributor during the turn of the century, Jacobs suffered a stroke in November of 2001. Today the 'David Jacobs Award' is given to the Georgia player who shows courage to overcome adversity and 'finish the drill'.
99 yards - Part I: Back in 2003, Georgia was fighting to get back to the SEC Championship as they were hosting the Auburn Tigers. In the 4th quarter, linebacker Odell Thurman sealed it as he caught a tipped pass thrown by Jason Campbell and darted 99 yards for the touchdown as the Dawgs won 26-7.
99 yards - Part II: Everyone remembers Lindsay Scott's 93-yard touchdown against Florida, but he had even a longer score in his Bulldog career. Back in 1978 in Baton Rouge, Lindsay had a touchdown run on a kickoff of 99 yards as the Dawgs won 24-17.
99 was the number of receptions in former tight end Shannon Mitchell's career. He had 15 of them in the muck and mud in Jacksonville against the Gators back in 1993.
1999 - Georgia record: 8-4
1899 - Georgia record: 2-3-1
Also in 1999, Uga VI made his debut in a changing of the collar with Uga V during halftime of the South Carolina game.
And in 1999, the great Herschel Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame… enough said.
