No. 34 Montverde (Fla.) Academy figures to soar up the RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings after a pair of bit victories this weekend.
Sure, it was playing in its own tourney - The Montverde Invitational - but it was impressive nonetheless as it defeated No. 18 Rockville (Md.) Montrose Christian, 59-57, on Friday, then topped No. 3 Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep, 54-51, for the title on Saturday night.
James Bell scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Montverde in the title game, but it was a miss that was the difference.
Findlay 's Cory Joseph, had 21 points but missed three 3-pointers in the final 13 seconds, setting off a wild celebration in the packed gymnasium, according to the Orlando Sentinel (read its story here).
"This sums up our season," Bell told the paper. "Our hard work paid off. We earned it."
Montverde coach Kevin Sutton was in tears after the big win.
"It's a huge win," he told the paper. "Findlay is very well-coached. I'm just real pleased with our community and how everybody came out."
The bigger win for Sutton may have come Friday night, when he beat his former mentor, Stu Vetter at Montrose Christian. Sutton was an assistant at Montrose for 10 years.
And just like Saturday night, Montverde survived on a miss from the opposition.
The game had five lead changes in the final three minutes and ended when a jumper by Terrence Ross for Montrose Christian bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
