- Former USC head football coach Pete Carroll, who left the Trojans for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, indicating there was no tension between him and USC athletic director Mike Garrett.



The 2009-10 championship season for winter sports has begun with California, Oregon and Stanford tied atop the men's hoop standings while Oregon and Stanford are undefeated in women's hoop as conference play continues.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the Leadership Council has determined nine recommendations for institutions seeking to move to Division I status.





Arizona

In football, the Wildcats received a verbal commitment from safety Marquis Flowers.



UCLA

In football, defensive lineman Bruce Price will forego his senior season and make himself eligible for the NFL Draft.



Arizona State

In men's hoop, junior guard Ty Abbott was named as the conference's player of the week.



Stanford

In women's hoop, sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike was named as the conference's player of the week.



Oregon

In men's hoop, the Ducks lost to the rival Beavers to fall to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.



California

In women's hoop, the Bears were swept by USC and UCLA to drop to 6-8 overall and remain winless in conference play at 0-3.



USC

In football, head football coach Pete Carroll resigned to become president and head coach of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and was replaced by former assistant coach and former Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin.



Washington

In men's hoop, the Huskies were swept by Arizona State and Arizona to fall to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.



WSU

In men's hoop, Wazzu defeated Arizona but lost to Arizona State to move to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play with an 84 RPI.

In women's hoop, the Cougars were swept last week, losing to Arizona State and Arizona to fall to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play with a 144 RPI.

In football, Wazzu received a verbal commitment from receiver Kristoff Williams.



Oregon State

In men's hoop, the previously winless Beavers upset rival Oregon for their first conference victory of the year to move to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
