Knox scores career-high in win over ASU

Brendon Knox scored a career-high 18 points as Auburn notched season-highs in both points and field goal percentage in a 94-78 victory over Alabama State in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Tuesday.

The Tigers shot 62.0 percent from the field as DeWayne Reed added 15 points, Lucas Hargrove 14 points and Tay Waller 13 points.

"Brendon Knox was our best inside scorer," said Auburn head coach Jeff Lebo. "We wanted to do that last game but he fouled out. We did a good job of getting it in there. Even with Lucas Hargrove in there, we were able to take advantage of that.

"We were able to do that this game, where in a lot of games we can't."

Alabama State (2-8), which missed its first 12 three-point attempts only to follow with making 11 of its next 12 three-point attempts, closed to within nine points at 62-53 with 11:52 to play.

The Tigers pushed their lead back out to 16 points several times and didn't let the Hornets get any closer than 10 the rest of the way.

"The last few games I wasn't working hard enough to get the ball in the middle," said Knox. "This game, I saw the opportunity because they were a small team. I took advantage of it and posted up.

"This game was to redeem myself from how poorly I played against Sam Houston State."

Auburn (6-6) took the lead for good at 13-12 on a Waller 3-pointer just over six minutes into the game and enjoyed a 46-33 lead at the half after shooting 62.5 percent from the field.

Menji Mundadi scored 15 points to lead five Hornets in double figures.

Auburn plays a week against Charleston Southern next Tuesday at 7 pm Central in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Tickets are $5 each.
