Power rankings: Gerhart does it all for Stanford

Stanford's Toby Gerhart isn't merely the nation's most physical runner.

He also is a pretty good passer.

Gerhart threw an 18-yard, game-tying touchdown pass to Ryan Whalen on a fourth-and-4 play and also rushed for 205 yards and three more scores Saturday in a 45-38 victory over Notre Dame. The performance made Gerhart the new No. 1 running back in the Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.

"How can you not at least invite him to the [Heisman Trophy] ceremony?'' Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck said afterward. "He took the team on his back."

Gerhart moved ahead of Alabama's Mark Ingram, who was held to 30 yards on 16 carries Friday in a 26-21 victory over Auburn. Gerhart has rushed for 1,736 yards and 26 touchdowns this season, and he has reached the end zone 13 times in Stanford's past four games.

That doesn't include his touchdown toss Saturday on his first pass attempt of the season.

"We practice that once a week," Gerhart said. "I threw up a prayer. In practice, those plays are wide open."

Gerhart's effort wasn't the only outstanding individual performance in that game. Notre Dame's Golden Tate caught 10 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns against Stanford to regain the No. 1 position in the receiver rankings. Tate took over the top spot from Texas' Jordan Shipley, who caught eight passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns Thursday in a 49-39 triumph over Texas A&M.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, BYU tight end Dennis Pitta, Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain, Tennessee strong safety Eric Berry, Clemson kick returner C.J. Spiller, Florida coach Urban Meyer, Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis and Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong remained atop their respective positions.

The power rankings are released each Tuesday during the regular season. The ranking of a player and coach can fluctuate each week during the season depending on how he fared the previous week. The power rankings measure overall career performances as well as their most recent results. Our coordinator rankings exclude coordinators who don't call their own plays or signals.
