Chizik talking Mississippi State
Like Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, Gene Chizik made his first appearance on the sidelines at Auburn as a head coach.
But unlike Mullen, last Saturday was not Chizik's first rodeo in Auburn or as a head coach. Both coaches were successful coming away with lopsided wins in their 2009 debut.
The Tigers took care of Louisiana Tech 37-13 pouring it on in the second half.
"It was great," Chizik said. "You've got to remember this isn't my first game coaching at Auburn, it was my first game as a head coach. It was exactly what I expected. Obviously I have been here before but it was neat to be the head coach. I really felt blessed and it was a good night. We had a lot of fun and it was a good feeling for me personally."
The game was tight early on with Auburn holding a slim 13-10 advantage over the Bulldogs but outscored them 24-3 in the second half to emerge victorious.
"I feel like the game unfolded like we had hoped," Chizik said. "Let me tell you that Louisiana Tech is a good football team. To be honest, I was glad that we were playing a really good team because I just needed to find out where we were at. We felt like the game would be close because they are a good team. Coach (Derek) Dooley has done a great job and it was close."
Chizik is glad to get the first win behind him but now has his attention focused on another set of Bulldogs in Mississippi State. He is hoping his Tigers can make the necessary improvements in order to compete in their SEC opener.
