Uzzi hopes to contribute on the field
Several offensive linemen redshirted last year for the Georgia Tech football team and one of the biggest linemen on the team, Omoregie Uzzi is ready to hit the field and contribute to some Jacket wins in 2009. Uzzi says fall camp has gone well and he is looking forward to getting ready for the Jacksonville State game in 18 days.
"Everything is going pretty well and I have a lot of work to do," Uzzi said. "I think we are close to where we need to be, but we have to do the little things to get better."
Cord Howard and Joseph Gilbert are holding down the two starting guard positions right now, but Uzzi and Nick Claytor are trying to push for playing time this fall. Uzzi says the two backup guards have been getting their share of reps with the first team offense during practice this fall.
"I am working with the ones and the twos mainly," Uzzi said. "I get a couple of reps with the ones and I mix in with Nick there sometimes, but I am mainly in the second rotation right now."
The former Chamblee star has been battling with his weight since arriving at Georgia Tech, but he feels pretty comfortable in his current weight range.
"I weigh anywhere from 300 to 310 pounds and that fluctuates a lot," he said. "I am comfortable playing anywhere from 300 to 310. I think the coaches want me a little bit smaller."
Overall, Uzzi is excited about getting on the field this season to try and help win some game for the Jackets and he knows that starting may be a long shot, but he is willing to put in the hard work and help out wherever the coaches can use him.
"I am excited and I would love to start, Joe and Cord are two very talented guards," Uzzi said. "Anywhere I can fit into the rotation I will be happy with.
