Bulldogs wrap up first day of practice

The first official day of practice is in the books for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The day began with a 5:30 a.m. practice for true freshmen and concluded with a two and a half hour session with the varsity later this afternoon.

New MSU head coach Dan Mullen was excited to see that his team maintained the knowledge of the offensive and defensive schemes during the spring.

"I was pleased," Mullen said. "You usually lose a lot from spring and it was maybe not the exact execution but at least the knowledge and understanding of the offense and defensive schemes and I thought they came out and did a pretty good job of grasping what was going on out there on the field."

State practiced in only shells and shorts on Monday and will not don pads until Wednesday.

With temperatures reaching the mid-90's on Monday the Bulldogs fared pretty well thanks to the offseason conditioning by new strength coach Matt Balis.

"It was a nice warm day and we tried to go at it," Mullen said. "The first day is going to be similar to game time in game one so we got out there with some heat. We are going to mix up practice at different times sometimes to get adjusted to the heat and other times to give them a chance to get cooled off."

Tomorrow's practice begins at 6:15 p.m. while Wednesday's starts at 4:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday practices start at 9 a.m. and all will be open to the media and public. Two-a-days begin on Saturdays and practices will remained closed to both the media and public for the remainder of the year.
