Varnado set for World Games tryout

Mississippi State's Jarvis Varnado has already swatted shots against the best that American college basketball has to offer.

Now he will have a chance to take his talents across the pond taking part in the USA Basketball Men's World University Games trials. The 6-foot-9 center will be leaving Starkville for Colorado Springs, Colo., for the team tryouts from June 16-24 in hopes of representing the country in Belgrade, Serbia July 2-12.

"It's a real good opportunity to show what I am made of against some of the best players in college ball," Varnado said. "I'm just going to try to make the team and represent my country overseas. It's an honor just to be invited to tryout."

Leaving the country is not something that scares Varnado and neither is the commercials or photo shoots the team has planned for him. The biggest fear for the Brownsville, Tenn., native is losing the dozen or so pounds that he has worked on putting on over the last few months.

"I'm kind of scared about going over there because I won't be able to eat right," Varnado said. "I don't know what they eat or have over there. I'm afraid that I am going to drop a lot of weight."

Varnado has been diligent in his quest to gain wait. The lean shot-blocker pulled his name out to the NBA Draft to comeback for his senior season in hopes of gaining additional weight before the 2010 draft.
