Redshirt Review: Nick Cody
It would be difficult to deny that 2009 will be a rebuilding year for Steve Greatwood and his offensive line. Graduating six seniors creates holes up front but opportunities for young talent. Offensive tackle Nick Cody is one such player looking to see the field. Duck Sports Authority takes a look at this Brush Prairie (WA) Hockinson HS product in its latest Redshirt Review.
Nick Cody originally signed with the class of 2008. The only other offensive lineman in that class was Hamani Stevens, who recently decided to pursue his mission instead of football for the next two years. Normally this would leave Cody as the only redshirt freshman entering the mix. In this case however he'll be joined by Carson York who greyshirted following his senior high school season and then like Cody, redshirted in 2008.
With five new spots in the two-deep available for the 2009 season, it is reasonable to conclude that everybody will get their shot. Cody is one who could easily emerge as a heavy contributor this spring. DSA spoke to offensive line coach Steve Greatwood about Cody's prospects.
"I'm really excited about Nick," Greatwood commented. "He's recovering from an ankle that hampered him all last season. The doctors promised me that if they went in and cleaned it out right after the winter break that he'd be ready to go for spring. I'm keeping my fingers crossed he'll be ready to go. It's put him a little behind in our off season conditioning but the benefits of him having that done and being at full strength outweighed the risk of waiting in my mind."
