Powell getting overdue attention

Dallas (Texas) Skyline wide receiver Mike Davis has been receiving as much attention nationally as any receiver in the country. But lurking in the shadows for the Skyline program is Joe Powell, one of the top wide receivers in the state of Texas.

Powell, is a quick, explosive wideout with terrific ability in space. Now, he is beginning to get his due with offers from Kansas and Houston.

"I like Kansas a lot and U of H they just offered me today," Powell said on Tuesday night. "Then Utah and Oklahoma State are very interested. I really like them a lot. Kansas was my first offer."

The early offer from Kansas put the Jayhawks in a good position for the talented wide receiver and immediately boosted his perception of the program.

"When I found out (about the Kansas offer) I was happy because at first I was really liking Oklahoma because I had went down to their junior day so I was like 'man, what do I have to do to step my game up and get that offer.' Then Kansas came knocking on my door and I really like them too.

"I know a lot about Kansas. I know they just got a new quarterback from Arlington Bowie (Christian Matthews) and then I talked to Coach Briscoe and they want me to come in and start as a true freshman."

Powell has the kind of athleticism to come in and make that freshman impact and that opportunity is important to him. He has the confidence to make that happen too.

"All I have to do is keep working hard at high school and then when I got to college, just ball," he said.

Outside of Kansas, Powell has some serious interest in some of the other schools that are actively recruiting him. One school in particular has a built in advantage.

"I really like Utah too," he said. "I really like them too and Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, they're recruiting me too. Michael Crabtree, that's my godbrother. I like Texas Tech."

Powell has several other programs that he has expressed interest in including Iowa State, Arkansas, Colorado State, Texas A&M, Missouri and Minnesota. He is also looking forward to attending junior days at four other programs.

"I'm going to Kansas, Oklahoma state, Texas Tech and Utah," he said. "I'm going to all those junior days. When I go to Texas Tech, I'm going to fly to Lubbock and Crabtree is going to pick me up. That's on the 28th. Kansas is this weekend."

As a junior, Powell caught 42 passes for 635 yards and eight touchdowns.
