Smith will wait until birthday to sign
Shaunessy Smith could be the only player the Bulldogs sign during the early signing period this week.
The three-star shooting guard from Macon, Miss., committed to the Bulldogs in late September and is happy about staying close to home for college.
"I think it was a perfect position for me to go to State," Smith said. "My family can see me play and it's close to home. I know all the coaches really good. I'm real familiar with the campus and stuff like that."
The early basketball signing period is from Nov. 12-19 but Smith said he would not sign until the final day. Not because he was awaiting more offers but because it is his birthday.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pounder had offers from USC, UAB, Clemson and Ole Miss but has not heard from anyone else since his commitment.
"Nobody has really called me since I have committed to State," Smith said. "They are probably calling my coaches but they haven't been calling me."
Smith is a fixture at the Bulldogs home games for the past few seasons and has built a relationship with several of the current players as well as recruits.
One player Smith has grown close to is Barry Stewart, who he will likely play behind next season.
