Jones ready to give Rebels a look

There's no denying that LSU is Tahj Jones' favorite.

However, the three-star linebacker from Sulphur, La., is open to looking at other programs and one in particular has intrigued him enough that Jones plans to check it out this weekend.

Jones, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound outside linebacker ranked as the nation's 35th best player at his position by Rivals.com, will make the trip to Oxford Saturday for Ole Miss' Southeastern Conference showdown with Auburn.

"I don't really know that much about their program, but I'm trying to see," Jones said. "(Ole Miss safeties) Coach (Kim) Dameron (who recruits Louisiana for the Rebels) is a good coach. We talk every week. He asks me how my grades are going and things like that. He's seeing if I'm getting my grades up."

It's no secret that Jones' academics were an issue this summer, so much so that LSU's offer was essentially conditional upon his meeting initial-eligibility requirements. Jones told Rivals.com earlier this fall that one he gets eligible academically, he planned to commit to Les Miles' Tigers.

"I really don't know," Jones said Tuesday when asked if that remained the plan. "That might still be the plan. I'm not really sure yet. They're close to home and I like their program a lot. It's similar to our program."

Jones, who has offers from LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Minnesota, made the trip over to LSU for the Tigers' win over Mississippi State last month. He said Tuesday night that LSU is the only school he's seen, but he's interested in checking out Ole Miss and Arkansas as well.

"I might could fall in love with another place," Jones said. "LSU was the only visit I've had."

Jones said a key element in his decision will be the opportunity for early playing time, something he feels Ole Miss can offer more than LSU "for sure."

Jones said he has 47 tackles and five quarterback sacks so far this season.
