Bell making most of senior season
Aubrey Bell is trying to make the most of his last opportunity.
The 6-foot-3, 217-pound wide receiver had only caught 24 balls in three years coming into his senior campaign but is on pace to shatter that mark before midseason.
Bell has caught eight passes for 81 yards in only two games this season and is tied for sixth in the Southeastern Conference averaging four catches per game.
"Aubrey has done an excellent job," said Bulldogs head coach Sylvester Croom. "He's come a long way. We've named him offensive captain for this week. He's smart, he has a great work ethic and I think he is in the best physical condition that he's been in since he has been here. He's lost about 10-pounds and just playing with a lot more consistency. He is not missing assignments and his routes are good. He is catching the football very well right now."
Bell took advice from wide receivers coach Pat Washington last season to shed some weight to improve his speed.
"Coach Washington was kinda telling me that I was oversized with my weight," Bell said. "He was always stressing to me last year that I needed to lose weight so that I could be a little quicker and little faster. In the offseason I worked on getting my weight down and keeping my weight under control."
Bell was one of a select few that Croom lauded during the beginning of fall camp for their superb conditioning. But Bell said it did not come easy and it took plenty of hard work and dedication on his part to stay in shape over the summer.
